Target Audience

The demographic i will be targeting will be the young working class male. In terms of social standing they are quite low down and have generally low incomes. Their social catergory is C2-E, as they can be either a skilled manual worker after having done an appreticeship or learned a trade through college or a family member(C2), they can also be a semi skilled or non skilled manual worker after entering a job after school(D), and finally they can be just casual workers or unemployed by either still being at school or just having a part time job(E).

This Niche market will like my short film as the going out with the intension to get out of control and overflowing violence will be what they look for in entertainment. They will be able to relate to the characters and will understand the dark humour of the hero being being over confident and getting retribution for his actions.

Movie Poster

This movie poster is typical of a normal movie poster. It has the main character/characters in the for ground and has the setting of the film in the background for example the urban setting of london in the green street film. It incorporate the ideology of the film of 'stand your ground and fight', by having it spray pained on a wall behind the characters. Having the rest of the gang in the mid ground it connotes their importance to the story aswell and the fact they are in this all together. The word 'hooligan' in the title of the shows the nature of the film to the audience allowing them to make a decision if they want to watch it. This word connotes violence and fighting that might be appealing to their target audience of thrill seeking young male adults.

Movie Poster

This is a good image for my poster as it represents destruction in the broken glass but it is a very raw picture and doesnt really give alot to the potiential audience of my film. This is positive as it gives nothing away as to its ending, but it also doesnt give any people in the potiental audience any additional information they may be looking for in order to intise them to watching the film.

Music

My music has be heavily influeneced by the work of Enrico Morricone who wrote the characteristic film scores of Leone's Spaghetti Westerns A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). This music will only be used to enhance the imaginary fight scene. It will not be used in the reality of the situation of the fight or the build up. This will give it a strong contrast compared to the diegetic sound of shouting and argueing of the real enviroment. This will add to the surrealness of my characters imagination.

Clip Analysis Green Street.

The fight scene at the climax of my short film will be similar to the fight scenes used in the hugely successful green street. It has fast editing with short action packed shots of close up and mid shot action. The fight begins with a long shot POV shot of the opposition which really takes the audience to the characters level and makes them empathise with their situation.
Green street hooligans represents the past history of football hooliganism that was strong in the 1980's. However this tendency for fighting in football games has been tackled by the footballing governing bodies (FA, UEFA, FIFA) so they are not nearly as prominant as they once were. However this desire to be like these form hooligans and take part in these violent act still remains with many working class individuals. This target market is targeted by the film and sells the ideology of hooliganism to them, while being careful not to promote the issue.

Plan for this week.

This week i plan to considerably add to my blog and get my ideas into my blog to show were i am actually at.
I willl get a storyboard of my short film uploaded as well as a detailed description of all the main shots i feel to be vital.
I will add lots to my secondary tasks which are my movie poster and my magazine review page.

Representation of characters.

My characters will represent aspects of society and people in society that my target audience will identify and understand.

My hero shall be a young man/teenager who just wants to have a good time at the weekend after a weeks worth of work. This is a traditional working class mentality, that after a weeks work they should go out and waste their money on immediately gratifying objects like alcohol. Were as more professional people would be seen to save their money for better things or invest in potientially rewarding plans. He will have a group of close friends who they don't let many outsiders into, this is common of most young people who want to look after them selves and surround them selves with people they've known for a long time and trust. His behaviour and way of life will connate that he as a limited amount of resources in terms of income and wealth as he is living a working class life in a small, uninteresting town. He will look to prove him self to his friends through out the night connoting his insecurity and desire to be popular. My main characters drunk state will show his purely emotional state and i hope to show his desire to be 'cool' and powerful. This will be represented by the western themed shoot out fight, as he wants to see him self as this powerful mysterious male when in fact he is not. Hopefully this idea of people striving to be like their role models will relate to my target audience aswell. This will hopefully relate to them as the working class male sstill looks up to other successful males in their lives, most look up to sports stars who have rose from similar backgrounds to forfill a dream of their own for example becoming a proffesional footballer or rugby player.

My villian will not be a villain in real terms as he is very similar to my hero character in terms of personality. He also seeks to impress his friends a prove him self through asserting his power on others through violence. People will also be able to relate to this character as they will have encountered people like this in their lives and perhaps gain a dislike for this characeter through encounters with this type of person. He will be more violent then my character and harder to sympothise with and like as he is essientially picking on some one who is vunerable and unable to defend him self.

My characeters friends will be in a similar mold to my hero as they are close friends. They will look for the same immediate gratification as my character and are from the same background of life.

These main character roles are defined by Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folk Tale. Were by a story shall always contain certain character types. The hero in his definiton struggles against the villain and trys to wed the princess, however in my film their is no princess but he does however see him self as a protector of his friends and seeks to gain their respect. The villain will by Propp's definition struggle with the hero and he will do in my film but he will be victorious.

Clip Analysis

Fistful of dollars shoot out.



The dialogue at the beginning of the clip were the hero (clint eastwood) asks for the coffin maker to prepare three coffins amplifies his confidence in being victorious even though the odd are stacked agains him.
Closes ups on the facial expressions of the villians show their concern at facing the hero. The hero then has and extreme close up on his face showing his anger at the situation he wishes to correct. He remains deadly serious and focused even though his dialogue is very strange. A close up on the villains gun and his hand moving towards it in the same frame (1:50-1:52) is a stereotypical western shot, were the shot shows the tension and lets the audience know that the scene is about to reach its climax. This shot is used in countless more westerns to increase the tension of an inevitable shoot out. Clint Eastwood character portays a quiet hero with confidence in his own ability fighting for him self. This type of hero would appeal to most male audiences as they would see him as a man they would like to be or be like. This type of hero is still present in modern day thillers for example the four 'die hard' movies in john mclean, and more recently wolverine in 'X-men origins'. The actor Bruce Willis ahs spent the majority of his career playing these roles in big budget films making him a well known actor and male idol.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly Final Showdown.



The clip begins with lots of close up on the characters. It also incorporates mid shots in the scene to capture the enviroment a dusty graveyard. In this shot the camer focuses on the gun and the characters twitching hand reaching for it(6:05-6:10). This is a classic western shot as it increases anticipation of the inevitable shoot out. In this sequence of shots a compilation of close ups and extreme close ups enhances the antisipation of the final shot and the emotions of the characters leading up to this moment(5:30-6:40). He later ruthlessly dispatches of his rival before philosophically explain his decision to his partner. He exclaims,'There are types of people in the world those with loaded guns; and those who dig'. This typifys the audiences position of being hard working people looking to use the western movies as a form of escapism from the tough lives as 'people who dig' and imagine they're a person with a loaded gun.

Fistfull of dollars - Final Fight.



Starts with a long shot that leaves the hero more as a sillowette than a defined figure. Close up of the villians then portray a state of arogence that then turns to concern. This signifies that they feel they will be the eventual winners of any battle. The hero walks into a close up of his boots. This then allows for many feet close up to show the movement of both sides. The villians then walk out of the close up allowing the camera to show the positions they have taken(1:22-1:40). The close up of the boots adds to the western cowboy mise en scene as it is traditional wild west foot wear. Walking out of the boot close up means the camera is looking up at the villians representing their power and superiority in the situation.

Fistful of Dollars: Introduction.



The introduction is the sequence that is at the beginning of the movie it informs the viewer on the cast with the actors names written in big bold writting in a contrasting colour to the background. The effect used is one of using bold colours in a sillowette with a contrasting background. This makes the object/person really stand out. It gives the watcher a clear understanding of what the film will be about as it shows a classically dressed male riding a horse being pursued by many many of the same dress. As the single character is bigger to fill the whole screen the following males are smaller to all fit into the shot this could also symbolise the fact he is more important to the plot.

The Idea.

I want to produce a short film, 5minutes in duration, that encapsulates a key contemporary issue and a traditional movie genre.

· I have decided to incorporate the issue encounted during a night out in the contemporary UK. For exmaple binge drinking, drugs, and violence.


· The traditional movie genre I wish to bring into the short film is an old american western style. I will try to encorporate this into the short film during a conflict between the main character and a villian. This will be merge into a shoot-out themed fight. It will build on a surreal feel that will come from the main character being heavily under the influence of different substances.


· I will encorporate key western shoot-out camera shots into this sequence.
- low shot, from behind the villian capturing the hero in the shot and both gun hands.
- extreme close ups, of the eyes in particular but also the faces to capture the emotions and tension of the scene.
- over the shoulder shot, that once again incorporates both characters and there emotions through the face of one of the characters.


· I havent yet come to a conclusion on the influence this western style theme will have on the mise en scene. The more I use the stereotypical old american items of clothing and hats, guns, and scenery the more surreal and distanced from the target audience the film becomes. But on the other hand the more believable the western theme becomes with the inclusion of these features.

The negatives of producing a piece of work themed on a western is the unpopularity of the genre with the institutions in recent years. With westerns in the making being very few if not non-existent. I will have to try and side with the more modern genre of action thriller over the more traditional western to bring a newer twist and a fresh take on the classic genre. This has been done in previous movie for example 'back to the future'. Where the western becomes a sci-fi hybrid. This is the only way the westerns have a direct influence on films in comtemporary films as they have became hybrids to maintain a changing appeal of the target audience.

The scenes will flick between the reality of the main characters situation and the surreal imaginary world he is experiencing.


This will be made clear to the audience through clear changes in editing speed, for example the editing will be quicker to sympbolise the frantic chaos of his real life situation while the surreal western themed imagination will have much slower editing as it is under control and has a very suppressed tension and nervousness that is present in most westerns of the past.

It will also be clear through the camera angles as i expect to use different more classically western shots like the low angle and extreme close up to gain the effect of the western gun slinging film.

Possibly the most recognisible change i wish to include though will be the change between diegtic sound and non-diegetic sound as the real life reality will have shouting and street back groung noses while on the other hand the western surreal sequence will include limited controlled sound and possibly music to add to the effect of the western.
