Movie Poster

My poster takes many points from the movie poster below in a similar genre film that was a huge great british success. The brick backround makes the poster seem very urban which relates to the film its self. In 'green street' the film is set in urban city centres on match days which is portrayed by the brick wall background with graffiti effect writting on it. The forground consists of the main character in my movie poster with his friend he is trying to impress lying back in the midground, this shows who the main character and focus of the film will be, it also shows the friend is behind the hero denotes his role as some one who stays behind his friend edging him on as the heroes motivation is mainly to impress him. This part of a male culture where men want to impress their peers to gain respect and constently seek validation.
The text for my movie out west is spelt using a cactus drawing to represent a 'T' , this was achieved by cropping the same image used to create the graffiti writting scribble effect shown on the brick wall in my poster. I then cut the image out then highlighted it with the brightness bar making it the same eluminus white colour as the rest of the tittle text.
The small distribution type logos in the bottom right are too show the audience on what format the short film is available, this could be useful as most short films are only available for viewing online or on hard discs.

Movie Poster

This is my perliminary poster. I am already thinking of improvements but i like the general concepts. The main character is the focus of the poster in the extreme foreground and his friend is in the mid ground. This is also true in the film as the heros behaviour is influenced by his friends in a big way with out them becoming the centre of attention in the film. The background is a photo of a wall with a drawing on white paper with inspirations from the wild west and the name OUT WEST.

Facial Expressions.

Margerie Ferguson also distinguished between different forms of stereotypical facial expressions taken up by male and female roles.

Females
  • The chocolate box look, this refers to the blissful enjoyment facial expression found on the front of chocolate boxs.
  • Super-smiler, this refers to the type of look adopted by a female were she keeps smiling excessively showing her teeth the whole time. For example in a tooth paste advert were the teeth and the smile is the focal point.
  • Invitational, this is a warm almost suggestive expression that invites the audience or character to join her.
  • Romantic or sexual, is a seductive look that is adopted to try and arouse some emotion from either the character in the text or the audience.

Males

  • Carefree, an expression that shows a relaxed, calm, blissful in ignorance man.
  • Practcal, this look shows the male as a weathered useful individual who has a hands on more traditional dominant masculine role.
  • Seductive, this look shows a want, a desire for a character in the text or the audience trying to entise them.
  • Comic, is were the expression shows them as less of a traditional male and more of a funny man who is sensitive and witty.
  • Catalogue, this involves a lost in the midground stair were by the characters gaze isnot focused. For example a look adopted by catalogue models.

Forms of attention.

Trevor Millum distinguished between many different forms of attention that could be gained by the audience.

  • Attention directed towards someone, as a point of interest to the plot of a sexual one.
  • Attention directed towards an object.
  • Attention directed to ones self.
  • Attention directed towards the reader.
  • Attention directed into middle distance.

I will be directing the attention towards my main character through out my text because he is the focal point of my text, even when the camera is not directly on him it will be influenced by his presence. This will create an enviroment where the audience can identify with him, either by relating to him or by judging him.

The Gaze.

Laura Mulvey believed there are many different types of gaze that could be used by the director for effect in the shot. These consisted of:

  • the spectators gaze (a commonly used angles that uses the audience to be there in the scene and experience it)
  • the intra-diegetic gaze (one character looking at another character)
  • the direct address (extra-diegetic, looking at you)
  • the look of the camera (showing the scene as if it was being filmed in the scene)
  • the gaze of the bystander (showing the scene through the eyes of some one else in the scene who isnt a focal point)
  • the gaze of an audience within a text (looking at an audience watching the action)

This shows how the camera type and angle can be used in many different way as the director sees fit. The spectators gaze will be included in my work as it is a fairly basic but effective angle of shot that allows the audience to be part of the action. I may incorporate the intra-dietic gaze in my film to show the world through my characters perspective. This will be useful as it will help my audience identify with my characters situation and enviroment through his own eyes.
The direct address is a very surreal concept were by my character would address the audience directly. I will not be using this as i still would like to keep an element of realism to my film as it will allow the audience to identify and understand him more like this. The gaze of the bystander is another gaze that could be applied to my work but i wont use it as i believe it would take the attention away from my main characeter and his perspective and that is what i am trying to portray.
